Best AL Rookie Pitcher?

Baseball, pitching
Today we'll start looking at some rookie of the year prospects. There is no such thing as "pitcher rookie of the year" - anymore. But there have been some very notable rookie performance so far this year.  I'm going to only look at starters in this case with a minimum 100 innings pitched. American League (top 4-5 per stat): Most Wins: 1. Matt Shoemaker, LAA, 14 2. Masahiro Tanaka, NYY, 12 3. Yordano Ventura, KC, 12 4. Odorizzi, Elias, Stroman, 10 ERA: 1. Masahiro Tanaka, NYY, 2.51 2. Collin McHugh, HOU, 2.79 3. Yordano Ventura, KC, 3.25 3. Matt Shoemaker, LAA, 3.25 WHIP 1. Masahiro Tanaka, NYY, 1.01 2. Collin McHugh, HOU, 1.04 3. Matt Shoemaker, LAA, 1.10 4. Is Santiago a good starter?

Angels, pitching
You will hear that Santiago is pitching better during the second half of the season.  While that may be true on some level (his ERA is down, OBA is down, etc), he still struggles as a solid starting pitcher. A good starting pitcher will go out and give you 6-7 solid innings and not give up more than 2 or 3 runs.  Santiago has shown over and over this season that he has a hard time pitching more than 5 solid innings.  I still contend he makes a great middle reliever - but a starter? In some ways the Angels don't really have a choice as to whether or not he pitches.  Santiago has proven to be able to throw 80-100 pitches and the Halos options are limited when it…

Angels Power Rankings – Pitchers – September 1st

Angels, pitching, Rankings
My rankings include the entire 40 man roster - not just the active 25 man. These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. An asterisk* means the player was not on the active roster at the time of this posting. Updates to List: September call-ups included Cam Bedrosian, Matt LeBlanc, Vinnie Pestano Cory Rasmus was shuffled down to AAA then back up Dane De La Rosa was removed from the 40 man Caleb Clay was removed from the 40 man Michael Kohn was removed from the 40 man Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments 1 Matt Shoemaker 1 - 1 13 Currently has a 21.2 scoreless inning streak. I'd be okay…

Game #137: Pitching Tryouts

Angels, pitching
Last night in Houston, Scioscia decided to have pitching tryouts.  I don't think the game started that way, after all, Wilson had been pitching a bit better lately, giving up 7 earned runs in his previous 4 starts.  Houston had other plans last night, and so did Wilson's command of the zone.  Wilson only made it 3.1 innings and the bullpen dip happened early. With the Angels down early and not hitting (Top of the lineup went 1 for 16 last night), Scioscia decide to throw in a string of pretty crappy pitchers.  In order: Yoslan Herrera - Pitched .2 innings.  Almost ruined the inning but managed to only give up 1 hit.  He had zero strikeouts.  His WHIP with the Angels is STILL 2.04.  Ouch. Cam Bedrosian - This…

Angels 5th Pitcher and who starts Game 1?

Angels, pitching
Some lingering questions remain regarding the Angels current rotation like, who the heck is going to pitch on Saturday??  Who is their ace now that Richards is out?  You know, that go to man who you throw in and know you are going to win the game unless something crazy happens or the offense doesn't show up? Since the Angels didn't heed my advice and call up a minor league starter for last night, that takes Santiago out of the mix for the A's series unless he pitches on 4 days rest Sunday which is unlikely.  However, he did only throw 93 pitches so stranger things have happened. First question - who is going to pitch Sunday?  Bartolo Colon?  RA Dickey? Scott Feldman?  None of these waiver wire pitchers come…

Angels/A’s Pitching Preview

A's, Angels, pitching
The two best teams in baseball happen to be in the same division and they have a very important 4 game series coming up this weekend at the Big A. In preparation for the series, the A's made a great move by calling up Drew Pomeranz (because they like pitchers with Zs in their name) to be a sixth starter which lines up their 4 best pitchers for this weekend's matchup.  The Angels will now face Gray, Lester, Kazmir and Samardzija. How about the Angels?  Nothing is certain at this point, especially with the lackluster outing from LeBlanc last night. Does he pitch again this week?  Against the A's?? Shoemaker is pitching tonight and Santiago is slated for tomorrow, which means the series lineup for the Angels looks like Wilson,…

Wade LeBlanc to replace Richards

Angels, pitching
It's official.  Garrett Richards will be out 6-9 months with a torn patellar tendon.  He will undergo surgery next week.  BEST case scenario is he could get a start at the end of spring training 2015.  Worst case is he'll return just after All Star Break. Brennan Boesch was sent down to AAA Wednesday in anticipation of pitching moves.  Today it was announced that Cam Bedrosian would rejoin the Angels and Left hander Wade LeBlanc would be called up to replace Richards in the rotation. As previously mentioned here and here, I hate noted LeBlanc as a possible call up for the Halos.  LeBlanc is expected to start Monday against the Marlins.

Angels Lose an Ace

Angels, pitching
Everyone knows an Ace in your hand makes your odds go up.  An Ace in your hand is more likely to beat a ten.  However, it's not just one card that makes the hand - it takes 5.  In this case it takes 9 (at a given time) on the field to a win a baseball game. If you are like me, you cringed when you saw the Angels Ace go down last night in the second inning.  Seeing Richards lay there on the ground in pain made me a bit sick to my stomach.  Having had a knee injury myself and seeing many around me, I know that even a minor injury takes you out a few week.  Being in that much pain most likely equals an ending to…

Pitching down the Stretch

Angels, pitching
Yesterday, Tyler Skaggs had Tommy John surgery which ended his 2014 and 2015 seasons.  He was likely to be a key man in the Angels rotation going down the stretch with perhaps Santiago moving to the bullpen.  The Angels don't visible have the strongest starting rotation among AL contenders, especially given the recent trades by the Tigers and A's.  They don't have a Price or a Lester.  But there is a relatively new ace in Richards, a mostly consistent Weaver, a wildly unpredictable Wilson, an inconsistent but improving Santiago, and surprising decent rookie Shoemaker.  Do the Angels need to land an Ace for the stretch - if there is even a way to make a deal happen and player to make it happen with?  Is there anyone in the organization…
