Week 3 Power Ranking – Position Players

Angels, Rankings
The ranking come a bit slow this week since Angels Stadium decided to give me food poisoning on Monday and I spent the past weekend at a tournament in Phoenix.  Still, here they are!  The Angels offense has still been weak but we'll see some changes in that for next week's ratings after last night's game. My rankings include the entire 40 man roster. These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. *** Salt Lake Bees Roster ** Arkansas Travelers Roster Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments 1 Mike Trout  1 - 1 1 "Slowed" down to a .385 OBP last week with 2 home runs and a double.  Must be rough…

Week 2 Power Rankings – Pitchers

Angels, pitching, Rankings
We've now had one full week of baseball so let's take a look at  the Angels power rankings leading into week 2.  Pitching was all over the place in week 1 and we apparently are currently without an "ace".  Most of the top performances came out of a bullpen that was pretty on target if you ignore Salas. My rankings include the entire 40 man roster. These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. *** Salt Lake Bees Roster ** Arkansas Travelers Roster Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments 1 Huston Street 10 +9 1 10 Phew.  His spring performance was a fluke, which is good since it SUCKED.  So far with 2…

Week 2 Power Rankings – Position Players

Angels, Rankings, Uncategorized
We've now had one full week of baseball so let's take a look at  the Angels power rankings leading into week 2.  There are currently way too many batting averages on the team in the .000's, .100's and .200's ranges.  The Halos are currently on the bottom of the AL in AVG & SB and second from last in OBP, Walks and Runs.  Ouch. My rankings include the entire 40 man roster. These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. *** Salt Lake Bees Roster ** Arkansas Travelers Roster Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments 1 Mike Trout  1 - 1 1 Trout took his hot spring right into opening week and…

Pre Season Power Rankings – Pitchers

Angels, pitching, Rankings
My rankings include the entire 40 man roster - not just the active 25 man. These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments 1 Jered Weaver - - 1 1 All this talk about Weaver's decline in velocity aside, this man can pitch.  He struck out 23 over 21 innings this spring on his way to a 2.53 ERA and 1.03WHIP.  The Weave is ready for opening day! 2 Drew Rucinski  - - 2 2 I honestly wish this guy had Santiago's rotation spot and perhaps he will once Richards comes back.  He gave up 2 HR in his last outing but was pretty dominant…

Pre Season Power Rankings – Position Players

Angels, Rankings
This is one of my favorite features on the site - and it's back!! My rankings include the entire 40 man roster . These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments 1 Mike Trout  - - 1 1 The 2014 AL MVP absolutely tore up spring training with a .541 OBP, 3 double, 3 triples, 5 HR and 5 stolen bases.  Let's hope he didn't peak too soon, but this is Mike Trout and he hasn't even hit full stride in MLB yet! 2 C.J. Cron - - 2 2 We may need Cron's bat in 2015 with Josh Hamilton (and even if Josh does…

Angels AFL – Hits and Misses

AFL, Angels, Rankings
Well, baseball is pretty much done for 2014 (queue sad music).  Until pitchers and catchers reports we'll mostly be watching the news for off season trades, roster moves and all the stuff that builds up the teams to compete in 2015.  For now - let's take a look at the Angels who played in the Arizona Fall League.  Who was a hit and who was a miss? The Hits: Chad Hinshaw, A, OF Hinshaw had a pretty good AFL season and will probably move up to AA at least.  He led all the Angels with a .410 OBP and this speedy center fielder also swipped 7 bases in 10 attempts.  His OBP was the 4th best in the entire league, and his stolen bases put him at 6th there. Cal…

Ranking the MLB Playoff Teams

Baseball, Rankings
Can you smell October?  MLB playoffs are right around the corner with the first wildcard matchup happening tonight at 8PM EST.  There are a lot of intangibles in determining who the best teams are in the post season but I've taken a stab at doing some rankings based on some statistics from each team's season.  Of course you pretty much throw the regular season out right now, but don't think it doesn't play an impact. Team WAR: 1 Dodgers 31.2 2 Angels 30.3 3 Orioles 29.0 4 Pirates 26.9 5 Nationals 25.4 6 Giants 23.7 7 Tigers 23.7 8 Athletics 23.4 9 Royals 22.6 10 Cardinals 22.0 It's no surprise to see the Dodgers on the top of the WAR charts.  After all, they have bought some top players and…

Final 2014 Angels Pitcher Rankings

Angels, pitching, Rankings
This final regular season ranking includes the top 20 Angels pitchers in terms innings pitched and excludes those no longer with the team (I'm looking at you Ernesto Frieri). Unlike previous weekly rankings, these are for the entire season as a whole.  A little bit unfair to the players who only pitched a few times, but life isn't always fair (just asked poor teamless Ernesto). These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. Rank Player Comments 1  Garrett Richards Despite a shortened season, Richards was the man for the Angels on the mound in 2014. Richards had a WHIP of 1.04 (3rd best), 2.61 ERA, .201 BAA (only .001 behind league leading Felix…

Final 2014 Angels Position Player Rankings

Angels, Rankings
This final regular season ranking includes the top 20 Angels position players in terms of at bats and excludes those no longer with the team (I'm looking at you JB Shuck). Unlike previous weekly rankings, these are for the entire season as a whole.  A little bit unfair to the players who only had 50 or 60 at bats, but life isn't always fair (like how did Ibanez end up on a post season team?) These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. Rank Player Comments 1 Mike Trout Mr. MVP tops the list of course.  Yes he struck out more times than ever but so what?  He still led the league is…

9/25 Angels Rankings – Pitchers

Angels, pitching, Rankings
My rankings include the entire 40 man roster - not just the active 25 man. These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. An asterisk* means the player was not on the active roster at the time of this posting. Updates to List: Drew Rucinski was added Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments 1 Jered Weaver 1 - 1 5 Weaver was an ace again last week only walking 1 and notching another win with 7 innings pitched. 2 Joe Smith 2 - 2 4 This guy rocks. 3 Matt Shoemaker 4 +1 1 13 Amazing sauce.  Fear the bear and all that jazz.  Let's hope he's healthy again soon! 4…
