Is Jered Weaver Broken?

Angels, pitching
Many bloggers, fans, etc., have already commented multiple times this season that Jered Weaver is broken.   His velocity is down, again, but is he REALLY broken? Last night, Weaver gave up 5 runs in the first inning but then was pretty flawless (retiring 12 in a row at one point) after that, save for a home run in the 6th inning. In five starts, Weaver is 0-3 with 29.1 IP, 19 ER, 6 HR and only 4 walks.  The 4 walks number looks pretty awesome, but what good is not walking people if you are giving up home runs and hits instead?  Weaver's WHIP is a non-so-ace-like 1.33 and his BAA is higher than most of the Angels offense is hitting at .289. Since 2012, Weaver has lost an average…

Broken Angels

Angels
The Angels are broken.  Not completely, but enough to warrant a little concern.  It's a long season, and it's only April, but we clearly have some issues (Aside from Scioscia's questionable managing skills).  I could certainly start with Mike Scioscia and some of the many reasons why I think HE is broken (or perhaps just not that good of a manager in general), but I don't go into that much here.  Remember last year when Raul Ibanez couldn't hit the broad side of barn with a backhoe?  Or how long we had to put up with our nerves every time Ernesto Frieri came into a close game?  Yep.  All Scioscia.  We would easily have won 100+ games last season if Mikey didn't have a tendency to let players outlive their…

Week 4 Power Rankings – Pitchers

Angels, pitching
Pitching last week was not exactly an Angels strong point.  Only three players managed to not give up ANY runs - Tropeano, Street, and Bedrosian.  Yes, that Bedrosian! My rankings include the entire 40 man roster. These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. *** Salt Lake Bees Roster ** Arkansas Travelers Roster Changes: Cam Bedrosian called up from the minors Nick Tropeano (called up then sent down after 1 start) Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments 1 Huston Street 1 - 1 10 Triple threes last week - Ks, Save, and games. 2 Garrett Richards 9 +7 6 8 Much better than his first outing, Richard put up great numbers last…

Week 4 Power Rankings – Position Players

Angels, Rankings
We finally had some signs of life in our offense last week with Cron and Calhoun leading that charge. Still waiting for the rest of the team (aside from Trout and Giavotella) to catch up. My rankings include the entire 40 man roster. These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. *** Salt Lake Bees Roster ** Arkansas Travelers Roster Changes: Efron Navarro sent to minors (Salt Lake) Gary Brown sent to minors (Claimed off waivers from St. Louis) Grant Green called up from the minors Removed Josh Hamilton (though he was technically on the roster last week) Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments 1 Mike Trout  1 - 1 1 Trout…

What’s Wrong with the Angels Offense?

Angels
We are three weeks into the season now and the Angels offensive numbers have been pretty, well, offensive. A few games recently have helped those numbers go in the right direction, but let's look where the Angels rank among all 30 teams: 24th in OPS @ .649 23rd in Batting Average @ .227 16th in Runs @ 75 24th in SB @ 6 (Mike Trout has 5) These numbers looked much worse one week ago before Kole Calhoun and CJ Cron found their groove.  Should we be concerned?  Perhaps.  Will our offense get better?  Most definitely.  Some of the current issues are noted below: Chris Iannetta .100/.220/.120 No one really expects Iannetta to equal his output of last year, which was pretty much his best pro year and probably an…

Week 3 Power Ranking – Pitchers

Angels, pitching, Rankings
We've now had one full week of baseball so let's take a look at  the Angels power rankings leading into week 2.  Pitching was all over the place in week 1 and we apparently are currently without an "ace".  Most of the top performances came out of a bullpen that was pretty on target if you ignore Salas. My rankings include the entire 40 man roster. These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. *** Salt Lake Bees Roster ** Arkansas Travelers Roster Changes: Adam Wilk added to 40 man roster Tyler Skaggs removed from 40 man roster Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments 1 Huston Street 1 - 1 10 Still one…

Week 3 Power Ranking – Position Players

Angels, Rankings
The ranking come a bit slow this week since Angels Stadium decided to give me food poisoning on Monday and I spent the past weekend at a tournament in Phoenix.  Still, here they are!  The Angels offense has still been weak but we'll see some changes in that for next week's ratings after last night's game. My rankings include the entire 40 man roster. These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. *** Salt Lake Bees Roster ** Arkansas Travelers Roster Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments 1 Mike Trout  1 - 1 1 "Slowed" down to a .385 OBP last week with 2 home runs and a double.  Must be rough…

Week 2 Power Rankings – Position Players

We've now had one full week of baseball so let's take a look at  the Angels power rankings leading into week 2.  There are currently way too many batting averages on the team in the .000's, .100's and .200's ranges.  The Halos are currently on the bottom of the AL in AVG & SB and second from last in OBP, Walks and Runs.  Ouch. My rankings include the entire 40 man roster. These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker's beard. *** Salt Lake Bees Roster ** Arkansas Travelers Roster Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments 1 Mike Trout  1 - 1 1 Trout took his hot spring right into opening week and…

Reflections on the Angels opening series

Angels
Baseball season is finally upon us and the Angels started out their season with a series victory over the Seattle Mariners.k  I happened to be in the Safeco seats for the opening day game and have some reflection on that game as well as the series in it's entirety. The Good: Angels - Winning the opening series and starting the season win the green with a 2-1 record is a great start. CJ Wilson - Holy cow.  Who was this guy on Tuesday?  Most will call it a freak one off - but you don't pitch THAT well unless you have something in you.  The question is how consistent can he be?  Wilson was no doubt dialed in on Tuesday with career bests in all sorts of categories.  "He threw…
