It’s time for the Angel’s Mid Season Power Rankings! First up – pitchers.
Oh, I know. Technically mid season was June 29th or so but I figured All Star Break was a good time to start.
My rankings will include the entire 40 man roster – not just the active 25 man.
These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker’s beard.

Just missed being the only Angels Pitcher to make the All Star Game. He’s been the ace so far this season |
2 |
Jered Weaver |
|
|

Weaver has had his moment this year. Good and bad. But pulls in the #2 spot. He may stay here if he can win a game against Oakland |
3 |
Joe Smith |
|
|
3 |
3 |
We’ll let his few bad games go since he has a .89 WHIP and is a beast against righties (.149 Avg) and in away games (.153 Avg) |
4 |
Jason Grilli |
|
|

Hang on to your spot Grilli. A short stint with the Halos but so far he holds down a 1.29 ERA and has struck out 7 in 7 innings pitched. (sorry you got stuck with Frieri Pittsburg!) |
5 |
Kevin Jepsen |
|
|

5 |
He’s been solid in the bullpen with a .178 opponent batting average and a .67 WHIP in away games |
6 |
Mike Morin |
|
|

6 |
Morin hasn’t walked anyone in his last 10 appearances and holds a 1.04 WHIP and 2.08 ERA on the season |
7 |
Joe Thatcher |

Haven’t seen much of him yet so he could screw it up. The ying to Smith’s yang as a lefty sidearm pitcher |
8 |
Fernando Salas |
|
|

8 |
Pitching well and leaving lots of runners on base (83%) |
9 |
C.J. Wilson, DL |
|
|
9 |
9 |
Wilson hasn’t made it out of the 5th inning for his past 4 starts. He managed a shutout in May and pitched well in April so he stays in the middle for now. |
10 |
Tyler Skaggs |

A respectable 1.25 WHIP this season. However, only 1 win in his last 6 starts. |
11 |
Cory Rasmus |
|
|
11 |
11 |
Rasmus has a crappy May but has just been getting better since then and has cut his ERA in half the past few weeks. |
12 |
Hector Santiago |
|
|
12 |
12 |
Santiago pitched excellent in June with a .96 WHIP. His win to loss ratio isn’t an exact measure of his skill but he does seem to have a problem getting quality starts. |
13 |
Matt Shoemaker |

The Shoe had a great May but not so hot June and July. Can someone just tell him it’s still May? |
14 |
Michael Roth, ARK |
|
|
14 |
14 |
Roth pitched pretty well for 2 innings and has done decent enough in AA |
15 |
David Carpenter , SLC |
|
|
15 |
15 |
Only 2 innings pitched but he’s perfect with zero runs allowed, zero hits, and zero walks and also decent in the minors. |
16 |
Michael Kohn, SLC |
|
|
16 |
16 |
The wrath of Kohn was sent packing to AAA despite a .141 opponent average though he does tend to walk a lot batters and recently got hammered by Tacoma for 5 ER |
17 |
Jose Alvarez, SLC |
|
|
17 |
17 |
Alverez just hasn’t been that great at SLC. His WHIP is 1.63 and he only has 17 Ks in 30 innings with 15 walks. He may only be on the 40 man since we have a weak farm system. |
18 |
Dane De La Rosa, SLC |
|
|
18 |
18 |
Opposing batters just teed off on De La Rosa with a .375 batting average. He’s doing remarkably better in the minors which is where he should stay for now. |
19 |
Cam Bedrosian, ARK |
|
|
19 |

Bedrock he is not. Another pitcher that got teed off on and he’s been sent packing twice now to AA. Hopefully he’ll learn how to pitch there. |

Welcome to the club kid. You blew your MLB debut. Let’s see how long you stay on the 40 man. I’m guessing less than two weeks. |
