Angels Power Ranking – Pitchers – August 4th

Home / Angels / Angels Power Ranking – Pitchers – August 4th

My rankings include the entire 40 man roster – not just the active 25 man.

These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Shoemaker’s beard.

Last week certainly had it’s ups and downs in the pitching department and there were a metric crap ton of roster changes.

Rank Player Last Week Change High Low Comments
1 ph_434718Huston Street 1  1  4 3 save appearances = 3 saves AGAIN.  Almost blew one of them by allowed the bases to load up but pitched superbly to get out of the jam.  If only he can maintain in zero ERA with the Angels for the rest of the season.
2 smithJoe Smith 3 uparrow +1 2 3 Smith was wonderful last week.  5.1 innings, .94 WHIP and 0.00 ERA.  Just what a setup man should be.
3 richardsGarrett Richards 4 uparrow +1 1 4 Despite getting the loss, Richards moves up one spot.  Why?  He didn’t walk a single person in 7 innings.  He really only had a few rough spots including an Adam Jones HR in the first and the Angels just did not score enough runs for him with only 4 total hits.
4 weaverJered Weaver 2 downarrow -2 2 4 Weaver was not very ace-worthy last week.  He didn’t pitch well against the O’s and pitched okay against TB. He got the win but gave up 6 hits and 4 walks in only 6 innings of work.
5 jepsenKevin Jepsen 5 5 6 0.000 ERA again last week.  Angels relievers have been very predicable lately but in a good way – not in a Frieri kind of way
6 skaggsTyler Skaggs, DL  9 uparrow+3 6 10 Skaggs was phenomenal before hitting the DL.   7 Ks and no hits over 4.2 innings.
7 santiagoHector Santiago 7 7 12 Pitched two innings of scoreless relief during the Angels 13 inning win over the Orioles.
8 grilliJason Grilli 6 downarrow-2 4 8 Three solid outing and one bad one where he tried hard to give up the lead to the Rays.  Fortunately he only gave up 3 runs and the Angels still got the win.
9 rasmusCory Rasmus 8 downarrow-1 8 11 In only took Rasmus 4 pitches to give up a game losing HR in the 12th inning to Manny Machado.
10 morinMike Morin 10 6 10 Morin was solid with a .43 WHIP in 2.1 innings.
11 shoemakerMatt Shoemaker 11 11 13 A rather high 1.6 WHIP and only 5 innings but he got the win and only gave up two earned runs.
12 bedrosianCam Bedrosian 13 downarrow +1 12 19 Has been amazing for Arkansas and was just called back up again.  Let’s hope the third time is the charm!
13 thatcherJoe Thatcher, DL 12 downarrow -1 7 12 Hard to rank a guy that barely every pitches (.1 inning last week) and now he’s on the DL.
14 salasFernando Salas 14 8 14 Pitched a solid 2.2 innings for the Bees last weekend.
15 wilsonCJ Wilson 9 15 Wilson came back from the DL to be utterly horrible on Saturday.  He threw 50 pitches and only recorded 4 outs.  He set the team back so far the offence couldn’t recover.  6 runs, 6 hits, 2 walks and a whole lot of OUCH.
16 rothMichael Roth, ARK 16  – 13 15 Sent down to Arkansas after a really bad 4.2 innings and 1.93 WHIP.
17 alvarezJose Alvarez, SLC 17  – 17 17 Didn’t pitch
18 rucinskiDrew Rucinski, ARK 18 18 20 Pitched once.  Pitched well.  Got the win.  Yay Drew.
19 delarossaDane De La Rosa, SLC 19 18 19 Didn’t pitch.
20 kohnMichael Kohn, SLC 20 16 20 He’d probably like a do over from last week.  And the week before.  There is a bad trend developing here with 13 earned runs in his last 9 innings

Updates to List:

Cam Bedrosian was called up from Arkansas
Michael Roth rode the roller coaster last week and was called up then sent down after one appearance
Fernando Salas was called up from Salt Lake
Joe Thatcher (sprained ankle) and Tyler Skaggs (flexor strain in forearm) were sent to the DL
David Carpenter was removed from the 40 man
CJ Wilson was returned to the active roster
